What 3½ by 4¾ inches actually tells you

Avery product 22827 is a finished 3½ by 4¾ inch rectangle. Avery identifies it as water-resistant film, says it uses removable adhesive, lists laser or pigment-based inkjet printing, and names wine bottles among its uses. That makes it a concrete stock option, not proof that every wine bottle has a 3½ by 4¾ inch panel.

Orientation matters too. Rotating the stock to 4¾ inches wide by 3½ inches high often produces a conventional front-label shape. On the Adelaida example above, even that 3½ inch height exceeds the supplier's 3.18 inch panel specification.

Measure before you design

   Find the straight body height

   Use a flexible ruler or paper strip. Measure between the points where the shoulder and heel begin to curve, then leave a little clearance.

   Check for taper

   Wrap a straight-edged paper band around the bottle. If the edges cannot stay parallel without wrinkling, reduce the width or ask for a tapered dieline.

   Choose the label system

   Decide whether you need one front label, front and back labels, or a wrap. A front label does not need the full bottle circumference.

   Proof the actual bottle

   Print the label outline at 100 percent, cut it out, tape it in place, and inspect it from the front and side before ordering stock.

Wine label size questions

What is a common wine bottle label size?

A 3½" by 4¾" rectangle is one readily available finished label size. For many bottles, it makes more sense rotated to 4¾" wide by 3½" high. It is still only a starting point: one current 750 mL Burgundy bottle has a published panel height of 3.18 inches.

Is there a standard label size for a 750 mL wine bottle?

No. Bottle capacity does not define the label panel. Bordeaux or Claret bottles generally have taller straight sides than many Burgundy bottles, and decorative shoulders or tapering can reduce the safe area further.

How much space should I leave around a wine label?

Leave visible room between the label and both body curves. Glass tolerances, hand placement, and slight taper make an edge-to-edge fit unforgiving. A plain-paper proof on the actual bottle gives a better answer than a generic margin rule.

Can I put a rectangular label on a tapered wine bottle?

A narrow front label may work, but a wide rectangle can wrinkle or lift because its top and bottom edges travel different distances around a taper. Ask the bottle supplier for the decorating area and test the exact material.
